I came to the comments first to figure out if there was a reason behind the title.
I think the main problems is that the educational system does not stress math and science heavily enough. A partial fix would be to only give federal financial aid and education loans to those who will get degrees involving math or science. While its important for society to have things like art and great literature what increases the average person's quality of life is technology. Technology also makes social change possible. A society where individual citizens decide things for themselves is much less possible if the technology to fuel widespread education is not available. It's why a lot of social change happened after the printing press was invented.
